Seagate is planning to release a whopping 16TB hard drive soon. Currently Seagate is making 10TB hard drives, but the company believes it can compressĀ even more into theĀ 3.5 hard drives. Seagate is getting the extra capacity through the use of helium, which makes the drives more able to cope with staying on track to the platter.
There’s a 12TB currently in testing and a 14TB version later in the year. From there, the 16TB version is likely to follow, says CEO Stephen Luczo.
The demand for high-capacity drives is mostly in enterprises and for consumers who can afford the drives. The drives are mostly used in NAS configurations.
The hard drives are surviving in PCs and servers only because SSDs are more expensive. Hard drives are popular among computer owners who want more storage capacity than most SSDs can provide.
